cisternal puncture

cisternal puncture /sistur″nəl/ [L, vessel, punctura, a piercing] , the insertion of a needle into the cisterna magna to withdraw cerebrospinal fluid for examination, usually performed with fluoroscopic guidance. The puncture is made between the atlas and the occipital bone.
