chondroblast

chondroblast /kon″drōblast/ [Gk, chondros + blastos, germ] , any one of the cells that develop from the mesenchyma and form cartilage. Chondroblasts secrete the extracellular matrix of cartilage and play an important role in endochondrial ossification and especially in longitudinal bone growth. Formerly called chondroplast.
