carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) [L, carbo + Gk, tetra, four, chloros, greenish] , a colorless, volatile toxic liquid used as a solvent. CCl4 is particularly toxic to the kidneys and liver; permanent damage to these organs may result from exposure.
