blood-borne pathogens

blood-borne pathogens, pathogenic microorganisms that are transmitted via human blood and cause disease in humans. They include, but are not limited to, hepatitis B virus (HBV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). A number of pathogens can be transmitted percutaneously, often by needlestick injuries.
