beta-lactamase

beta-lactamase /-lak″təmāz/ [lactam, a cyclic amide, ase, enzyme] , a bacterial enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of the beta-lactam ring of some penicillins and cephalosporins, producing penicilloic acid and rendering the antibiotic ineffective. Also called cephalosporinase, penicillinase.
