acid burn

acid burn, damage to tissue caused by exposure to an acid. The severity of the burn is determined by the strength of the acid and the duration and extent of exposure. Initial emergency treatment includes irrigating the affected area with large amounts of cool or room-temperature water. Compare alkali burn.
