word blindness

word blindness [AS, word + blind] , an inability to understand written language. A form of receptive aphasia caused by lesions in the parietal or parietal-occipital areas of the brain. The condition may be congenital or acquired as a result of disease or injury. Also called alexia. Compare dyslexia.
