tissue macrophage

tissue macrophage [OFr, tissu + Gk, makros, large, phagein, to eat] , a large, mobile, highly phagocytic cell derived from monocytes. These cells become mobile when stimulated by inflammation and migrate to the affected area. They are resident in specific tissues (for example, alveolar macrophages in the lungs).
