temporalis

temporalis /tem′pəral″is/ , one of the four muscles of mastication. It is a broad radiating muscle that acts to close the jaws and retract the mandible. Also called temporal muscle. Compare masseter, internal pterygoid muscle, external pterygoid muscle.
