autosplenectomy /ô′tōsplinek″təmē/ [Gk, autos + splen, spleen, ektomē, excision] , a progressive shrinking of the spleen that may occur in sickle cell anemia. The spleen is replaced by fibrous tissue and becomes nonfunctional.
