tantalum (Ta) /tan′tələm/ [Gk, Tantalus, mythic king of Phrygia] , a silvery metallic element. Its atomic number is 73; its atomic mass (weight) is 180.95. Relatively inert chemically, tantalum is used in prosthetic devices such as skull plates and wire sutures.
