stingray

stingray /sting″rā/ [AS, stingan + L, raia, ray-fish] , a flat, long-tailed fish bearing barbed spines on its back that are connected to sacs of venom. Spasm of the skeletal muscles, severe local pain, seizures, and dyspnea may occur if a person’s skin is broken by the spines. See also sea urchin sting.
