shin splints

shin splints [AS, scinu, shin; ME, splinte] , lower-leg pain caused by strain of the long flexor muscle of the toes during strenuous athletic activity, such as running. In many instances, shin splints are the result of inadequate training. Treatment usually involves rest and exercise therapy. Surgery is sometimes necessary.
