shell shock

shell shock [AS, scell + Fr, choc] , any of a number of mental disorders, ranging from extreme fear to dementia, commonly attributed to the noise and concussion of exploding shells or bombs but actually a traumatic reaction to the stress of combat. See also combat fatigue, posttraumatic stress disorder.
