ruthenium (Ru) /ro̅o̅thē″nē·əm/ [Ruthenia, region of western Ukraine] , a hard, brittle, metallic element. Its atomic number is 44, and its atomic mass is 101.07. A compound of ruthenium was used in nuclear testing in the 20th century, increasing the risk of malignancy for those exposed.
