radiopaque contrast medium

radiopaque contrast medium, a substance that stops the passage of x-rays and is used to outline the interior of hollow structures, such as heart chambers, blood vessels, the GI tract, and joint spaces, in x-ray or fluoroscopic pictures. Also called radiographic contrast medium. Compare radiolucency.
