pyknosis

pyknosis /piknō″sis/ , the condensation of nuclear material into a solid, darkly staining mass in a dying cell. It is characterized by the clumping of chromatin and shrinking of the nucleus of the cell. The cell itself may enlarge in response to cell necrosis.
