artificial heart

artificial heart, a mechanical device consisting of a pump and artificial ventricles capable of fully sustaining an individual’s circulatory system. It is used to keep the patient alive until transplantation is possible. The first artificial heart to be successfully implanted was the Jarvik-7 in 1982. Kinds include AbioCor, Berlin heart.
