proton pump inhibitor

proton pump inhibitor, an agent that inhibits gastric acid secretion by blocking the action of hydrogen ions, potassium ions, and adenosine triphosphatase at the secretory surface of gastric parietal cells. Also called gastric acid pump inhibitor.
