proteoglycans

proteoglycans, glycosylated proteins present in virtually all extracellular matrices of connective tissues. The major biological function of proteoglycans is to provide hydration and swelling pressure to the tissue, enabling it to withstand compressional forces. Other biological functions are being studied.
