pronephros /-nef″rəs/ pl. pronephroi [Gk, pro + nephros, kidney] , the earliest and simplest kind of excretory organ in the developing vertebrate embryo. In humans and other mammals the structure is nonfunctional. Also called archinephron, head kidney, pronephron. See also mesonephros, metanephros. −pronephric, adj.
