poisoning, 1. the act of administering a toxic substance. 2. the condition or physical state produced by the ingestion of, injection of, inhalation of, or exposure to a poisonous substance. Identification of the poison ingredients and presentation of a container label are critical to expeditious diagnosis and treatment.
