phosphate binder

phosphate binder, a substance, such as aluminum hydroxide, calcium acetate, or calcium carbonate, that binds phosphate in the blood, removing it from circulation. It is used in treatment of hyperphosphatemia in patients with end-stage renal disease or hypoparathyroidism.
