apoptosis

apoptosis /ā′pōtō″sis, ā′poptō″sis/ [Gk, apo, away, ptosis, falling] , necrosis of keratinocytes in which the nuclei of the necrotic cells dissolve and the cytoplasm shrinks, rounds up, and is subsequently phagocytized. The term generally refers to “programmed” cell death.
