ointment [L, unguentum, a salve] , a semisolid, externally applied preparation, usually containing a drug. Various ointments are used as local analgesic, anesthetic, antibiotic, astringent, depigmenting, irritant, and keratolytic agents. Also called salve, unction, unguent.
