nucleolus

nucleolus /no̅o̅klē″ələs/ pl. nucleoli [L, little nut kernel] , any one of the small, dense structures composed largely of ribonucleic acid that are situated within the cytoplasm of cells. Nucleoli are essential in the formation of ribosomes that synthesize cell proteins.
