nosocomial infection

nosocomial infection, an infection acquired at least 72 hours after hospitalization, often caused by Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, hepatitis viruses, herpes zoster virus, Pseudomonas, or Staphylococcus. Also called hospital-acquired infection.
