isoleucine (Ile)

isoleucine (Ile) /ī′sōlo̅o̅″sēn/ [Gk, isos + leukos, white] , an amino acid that occurs in most dietary proteins and is essential for proper growth in infants and for nitrogen balance in adults. Also spelled isoleuceine. See also amino acid, maple syrup urine disease, protein.
