insomnia /insom″nē·ə/ [L, in, not, somnus, sleep] , chronic inability to sleep or to remain asleep throughout the night; wakefulness; sleeplessness. Insomnia may be the symptom of a psychiatric disorder. Formerly called agrypnia.
