insidious /insid″ē·əs/ [L, insidiosus, cunning] , describing a development that is gradual, subtle, or imperceptible. Certain chronic diseases, such as glaucoma, can develop insidiously with symptoms that are not detected by the patient until the disorder is established. Compare acute.
