head bobbing

head bobbing, a sign of respiratory distress in an infant. It occurs when the infant uses the scaleni and sternocleidomastoid muscles to assist ventilation. The contraction of these muscles causes the head to bob because the neck extensor muscles are not strong enough to stabilize the head.
