hard disk

hard disk, a computer data storage medium that consists of a rigid disk with an electromagnetic coating allowing information to be transcribed onto and from it. Permanently mounted in a dust-proof container, a hard disk has a storage capacity many times that of a diskette. Also called hard drive. Compare diskette.
