halogen

halogen /hal′ōjən/ [Gk, hals, salt, genein, to produce] , any member of group 17 (or Group VIIA) in the periodic table: fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine. With the exception of astatine, they are found in seawater as the corresponding halide ion.
