gerontogen /jeron″təjən/ , an environmental agent that contributes to the aging process by accelerating the onset and/or rate of progression of aging. Examples include age-dependent cellular and biochemical responses to oxidant damage to aging of cells. Kinds include cigarette smoking, ultraviolet (UV) rays.
