gypsum

gypsum /jip′səm/ , a mineral composed mainly of crushed calcium sulfate hemihydrate. It is the main ingredient in making plaster of paris surgical casts, dental casts, and impressions for dentures. Gypsum dust has an irritant action on the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract and the conjunctiva.
