green fluorescent protein (GFP)

green fluorescent protein (GFP), a protein obtained from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria that emits a bright green fluorescence when illuminated. GFP is used to monitor gene expression, gene transfer across plasma membranes, and cell surface activity.
