glycosphingolipids

glycosphingolipids /glī′kōsfing′gōlip″ids/ , compounds formed from carbohydrates and ceramide, a fatty substance, found in tissues of the central nervous system and also in erythrocytes. Deficiency of an enzyme needed to metabolize glycosphingolipids leads to a potentially fatal nervous system disorder.
