formic acid (HCOOH)

formic acid (HCOOH) /fôr″mik/ , a colorless, pungent liquid found in nature in nettles, ants, and other insects. It is prepared commercially from oxalic acid and glycerin and from the oxidation of formaldehyde. Formerly used as a vesicant, it currently has no therapeutic applications. Also called methanoic acid.
