epiphyseal plate

epiphyseal plate [Gk, epi, above, phyein, to grow, platys, flat] , a thin layer of cartilage between the epiphysis and the diaphysis of a bone. It is the bone-forming center responsible for growth in bone length. Epiphyseal plates remain open until late adolescence. Also called growth plate.
