ectopic rhythm

ectopic rhythm [Gk, ek + topos, place, rhythmos, beat] , an abnormal heart rhythm caused by the formation of impulses in a focus outside the sinus node. Such a rhythm may be protective in cases of failure of the sinus node or excessive slowing of its rhythm, or it may indicate an active abnormal focus.
