diffusion defect

diffusion defect, any impairment in the diffusion of oxygen across the alveolar-capillary membrane caused by pathological changes in any of the structures of the membrane. Specific causes may include fibrosis, granuloma, interstitial edema, and proliferation of connective tissue.
