desmosome

desmosome /dez″məsōm/ [Gk, desmos, band, soma, body] , a small, circular, dense area within the intercellular bridge that forms the site of adhesion between certain epithelial cells, especially the stratified epithelium of the epidermis. Also called macula adherens.
